Introduction to Katonishi Elementary School

school

Welcome to Katonishi Elementary School! We are located in a rural area of Japan, approximately halfway between the two big cities of Fukuoka and Kitakyushu (see maps here). Our school is the newest one in this area, having only opened in 1998, and it is modern and well-equipped with open-plan classrooms, a computer room, a domed sports hall, a large sports ground, and a swimming pool. Although the school is quite large (around 550 pupils and 30 staff), the atmosphere is very friendly and we have good relationships with the local community. Many local people come into the school to help us with various projects, such as nature study, farming, and traditional crafts. We are also lucky enough to have an Assistant Language Teacher (ALT), who comes to teach English to our pupils. In addition, over the years, we have had several visits by children from schools in other countries, including New Zealand, Korea, China, and Bulgaria. We therefore have a great interest in international communication and are looking forward to hosting more visitors and participating in email or penpal exchanges in the future.

Local Area

munakata

Katonishi Elementary School is located in Munakata City in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. Although it is called a "city," really this is a rural district of approximately 95,000 people living in several villages and small towns, which were combined to form Munakata City in 2003. As you can see in the picture, from the school, we have a view of four hills: Mt. Jou (369m), Mt. Kana (317m), Mt. Kodaiji (499m), and Mt.Yukawa (471m). This range of hills leads from Fukuoka University of Education (one of the three universities in Munakata) to the sea at the fishing village of Kanezaki. Being so near the sea, we are able to enjoy a wide variety of delicious fresh seafood in Munakata. The area is also a popular place for people to visit and one of the main attractions is Munakata Taisha (Munakata Great Shrine), where people come to pray for driving safety. Among our many local amenities, we have Munakata Yurix Culture & Sports Center, and Fukuoka Children's Nature Center at Genkai.
